about

Last summer at Berkeley Repertory Theater, I played opposite Nils Frykdahl (our co-conspirator in Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) in a piece by the Erika Shuch Performance Project called After All. While developing the piece, we had a chance to write many new songs together including this one. The lyrics are by playwright Michelle Carter, who wrote the script for After All. In the staged version, this song was sung by Nils (AKA Santa Claus) me (AKA The Preacher) and Beth Wilmurt (AKA The Goldfish.)

The lyrics pay tribute to totems of the natural world and their quiet grace.* Carla and I began performing a duo version of this song this past fall. We’ve often been accused of saying too much about our songs before we play them live, but we’ll just let this one explain itself. -MB

(*It is, of course, our flagrant refusal to listen that will surely deliver us to our collective demise. -CK)

lyrics

The bristlecone pine has nothing to say.
The blackberry vine has nothing to say.
The carpenter ant has nothing to say.
The wintercress plant has nothing to say.

The rainbow smelt has nothing to say.
Orion’s belt has nothing to say.
The earthworm cocoon has nothing to say.
The man in the moon has nothing to say.

The coral snake has nothing to say.
The freshwater lake has nothing to say.
The vinegar fly has nothing to say.
The sun in the sky has nothing to say.
