Directors David and Hi-Jin Hodge made a documentary about automobile culture and its human and environmental repercussions. They asked us to write a song to frame the film and encapsulate its message. We wanted to acknowledge both the appeal/excitement of all that cars represent - speed, adventure, independence - and the necessity to step away from our addiction to cars and the fossil fuels that feed them.
The keys to solve this dilemma have always been in our hand.
lyrics
I touch the earth but never the ground,
my footfall makes no sound.
Light the flame, light the fire,
keys in my hand.
Ready to burn it down.
I ride fire, ride the flame,
move so fast I have no name.
Can’t slow me down, wind in my hair.
Ready to run, run, run...
I touch the earth but never the ground,
my footfall makes no sound.
Light the flame, light the fire,
keys in my hand,
Ready to burn, burn,
ready to burn it up.
I ride fire, ride the flame,
move so fast I have no name.
Can’t slow me down, wind in my hair.
Ready to run, run, run...
ready to run, til I run out of time.
The stillness is teeming.
Come!
Come close and close your eyes,
your nerves alive!
The silence is seething,
Stay!
Stay still a while, alive,
adjust your eyes.
Forget you ever saw me here!
Just below the road a tangle of roots
remembers my name.
Lights a flame, lights a fire,
keys in my hand.
Ready to slow it down.
I touch the earth, feel the ground,
stand so still I make no sound.
I hear the wind whisper low,
“Get ready to run...
You’ve run out of time.”

Carla Kihlstedt = quality music, to me.
This is excellent creative music, wonderfully recorded and mixed, probably my fave for 2017. Early days (first listen), but I'm so enthusiastic I just started typing this after hearing the 7th track (WHAT A MELODY!). Deeply intriguing, emotionally charging and cognitively tickling all of your senses...I absolutely love it!
Fans of Sarah Kirkland Snider, My Brightest Diamond, even Bjork, and Kihlstedt of course should check it out... Tjarko Busink
