about

This is a song of physical transformation and dissolution. It is about the inextricable cycles of life and death. At its death, a whale's body is only halfway through with its profound productivity. It then undergoes an epic process through which the elements of its body are reclaimed. First, the large flesh-eaters come, then smaller opportunistic nibblers and bone-cleaners, and then a whole garden of Osedax worms and sulfophillic bacteria grow, feeding on the lipids in the bones for 50-100 years. And so, a whale becomes a garden of life on an otherwise barren sea floor.

lyrics

No pilot, no anchor,
no rudder, no flag.

Sailing blind.
Guide me, bring me home.

I am an edifice.
Unbind me.

Putrify me.
Purify and prepare me.

Disappear me.
Resurrect me.

Bathe me in brine.
Clothe me in Osedax grass.

No hunger, no mission,
No passion, no voice.

Unbind me.
Break me down.
Colonize these bones.

Lipid, sugar, sulfide, carbon.
Now I feed the hunted.
