about

Again, her reverie is interrupted, this time by a clicking sound… mapping sonar, a motor, a loud explosion, and another, and another. All sounds seem to come from everywhere – impossible to escape. Those who are able, flee the deafening noise, dramatically disrupting their lives, and those who cannot flee, live in a continually fragmented world.

Sound moves four times faster and travels four times farther in water than in air. Between high traffic shipping lanes and the sonic assault of seismic air blasts used in underwater oil exploration, she cannot form, much less finish, a thought. The many songs and sounds of ocean-dwelling animals have been all but drowned out by our noise pollution. And, as with us, communication is the key to their daily survival. She finds herself in the midst of thousands of dislocated creatures, all looking for refuge from the noise. Many of the people responsible have no idea of the damage they are causing. It is merely a byproduct of their work.

lyrics

It comes from all around.
It comes from all around.

It enters through the spine, the skin, the flesh,
through the water, through the waves.
I am water, I am waves, I am inside, I am out.

The ears feel, and the eyes taste.
The body hears with every cell.

It comes from all around.

I seek refuge.

There is no way to draw a line here.
Your pen, it blackens and it bleeds.

I seek refuge.
