about

We wrote "In The Dead of Night" during a European Rabbit Rabbit tour. We wanted begin our set with a stark a cappella song. Of course, we didn't have one yet, so we set to writing it over a period of three days on trains and in backstage dressing rooms, adding a new verse each day and performing what we had each night.

I was reading a very powerful book by S. C. Gwynne called Empire of the Summer Moon and was taken with this tale from America's darkest period, in which our government systematically (although not easily) wiped out the Native American population. Characters in the book jumped off the pages, from Jack Hays (the most notorious of the Texas Rangers), to Quanah Parker (legendary half-white Comanche Chief) to Cynthia Ann Parker (Quanah's white mother, captured by Comanche's as a child and fully welcomed into the their world.)

Our song grew out of all these images and stories, and while it has veered from it's roots as an a capella song, it has taken on new dimension with Jon Evans' soulful plains-drifter guitar and dobro playing. We pay tribute to The Band ("The Weight") and Neil Young ("Broken Arrow") with this month's studio treatment. -MB

lyrics

In the dead of night, two worlds collide.

In the dead of night, winged horses arrive.

Took my sister, took my son,
mother, father, everyone.
In the dead of night, we did ride.

In the dead of night, blood fills my eyes.

In the dead of night, my own family I deny.

Leave my saddle, leave my gun.

Now the life I knew is done.

In the dead of night, we will ride.

In the dead of night, arrows paint the sky.

In the dead of night, men and mares and dust elide.

I hear you call out my old name

but it’s too late, I’m not the same.

In the dead of night, I will ride.
