about

As you know, 2014 was The Year of the Guitar here at RRR. Every month, we asked a different one of our personal guitar heros to send us a rhythm track to a non-existent song, whatever that means to them. This features our long-time co-conspirator, Joel Hamilton.

This is the selfsame Joel Hamilton who:
- wreaked sonic havoc in our band The Book of Knots
- bombed across country (and placed 2nd) on his Vespa in the Scooter Cannonball Run
- is a partner at the legendary Studio G, Brooklyn
- has produced records for BlakRoc, Unsane, Matisyahu, Jolie Holland, Ceramic Dog
- can still do a standing backflip
- was a member of MENSA

“Falling Awake” features Joel Hamilton’s signature web of guitar. His super solid David-Axelrod-horror-show-groove-meets-Balinese-gamelan-orchestra adds up to an incredibly rich and intuitive bed for this song. My lyrics for the song emerged from a typical thematic fog. Usually an image pops into my head. In this case, I was inspired by the twisted relationship between Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright (AKA Frank and Claire Underwood) in the second season of “House Of Cards.”

I honestly imagined them tying each other up and doing nasty things to each other. I couldn’t shake that, and began to spin various scenarios that lead to these heavily veiled lyrics. The refrain “Keeps me from falling awake” conjures a life kept interesting by shocking yourself with your own personal perversions. -MB

A Word From Joel Hamilton:

When I sat down to put some noises to tape for this installment of RRR, it made me nostalgic for the collaborative efforts of our dear Book Of Knots project. The chemistry created by a perfect blend of knowing and not knowing, smart and stupid, artistic and sadistic is something I miss in my life. Consider this a bondage-themed love letter to my former bandmate and our epic three record journey to the ends of the earth and back. I hope you enjoy being tied up and allowing this song to make every day a rainy, frustrating Sunday.

lyrics

FALLING AWAKE

Will you wait for me in the dark?
Can you make it hurt from the start?
Make a fool of me.
Play your part.
Sell an acre of my broken heart.

I’ll sit up ‘til I stand up.
I’ll stand up ‘til I run.
I’m run down ‘til I’m face up.
I’m face up when I’m dead.
I’m dead because I’m living.
I live against your will.
Your will is like an answer.
An answer makes me still.

Keeps me from falling awake.
