about

This month’s song “Cross The River” attempts to chronicle the thoughts of a solo wanderer. A curious hobo - a big-hearted life-enthusiast at a crossroads in life who chooses to take the road less-traveled, to put him or herself in the way of opportunity. This was the case with our friend Andrew Forsthoefel, a crackingly smart Middlebury grad who in failing to become a legendary lobsterman, became our generation’s William Least-Heat Moon. An asker of questions, a great listener, an archivist, a vessel through which the quiet stories of life could flow, Andrew walked across the USA from Philadelphia to San Francisco, armed with a recording device, a mandolin, and a sign saying “Walking to Listen.”

Carla, Jon Evans and I were lucky enough to score the radio documentary that grew out of Andrew’s travels. Produced by our frequent collaborator Jay Allison, “Walking Across America: Advice for a Young Man” is an amazing listen, and should be inspiring to all those who find themselves questioning what their next phase of life might look like.

I took liberties with our fictionalized account of Andrew’s travels. It was easy for me to imagine the peace, the solitude, the loneliness. Harder to capture was the leaving of on old life, the people waiting for you at home, the self-doubt, the quelling of panic, the physical strength required to complete such an enormous feat.

Before too long, I started walking in our character’s shoes, and soon the song morphed into my own fears about becoming a new dad, moving, starting a new life. So it goes. You follow your heart and the pen. Don’t let the bright tempo fool you, this song is sad and conflicted. -MB

lyrics

Found a phone in an Arby’s parking lot.
Forgot your number so I kept the time I’d bought.

Cross the river on the other side.
Not sure I’m still alive,
but if I am I’ll sing a song about you.

The words will come before I’m done.
I’m fairly certain of it.

I’m shouting stories to the wind, crushing fireflies.
Don’t think I’ll come tonight
but if I do I’ll find a way to tell you.

I’m counting stars and turning in.
So long to Mother Nature.
I think you told me I would hate her much later on.

Cross the river on the other side just to feel alive.
I think I’ll swim and touch the bottom with my shoes.

As the world breaks apart
I’m gonna run around it.

Cross the river on the other side.
Maybe cast out a line.
For if I do, I’ll surely get back to you.

The road ahead is just a lie that keeps a man from falling.
Cross the river on the other side.
Just enjoy the ride.

Not sure you’re waiting,
but I’m walking home to you.
