about

A little history. “Back Home” was born during a manic week that straddled May and June. The great bassist Tony Levin had just recently highlighted Sleepytime Gorilla Museum on His Three Pieces series on YouTube. Members of SGM took the opportunity to reach out and thank him for his tribute. Tony responded personally to a mail I sent him.

Turns out he lived on The Cape many years ago, and was going to be vacationing the following week here. “Why don’t we do some recording?” I suggested. The rest is nearly history, as I actually had to write this song. Tony came to Brick Hill at the beginning of June with his NS electric upright, and absolutely killed it on “Back Home.”

History aside, the song attempts to illustrate the sometime blackness of small town life. The lifelong friendships, the sense of imprisonment, the desire to take flight and never return. It’s again chock-full of plastic drum grooves, forever cycling synths, and (thank goodness) the human warmth of Tony’s bass, Jon’s guitar, and Carla’s strings.

I’d like to dedicate this song to my brother, and to John Vanderslice, a dear friend and great talent who perhaps was looking over my shoulder while I wrote this. -Matthias Bossi.

lyrics

I never met a death I didn’t love.
If there’s a message from above I didn’t hear it.
Where went my spirit?

Drew a map on a paper bag.
You said you loved another boy named Brad, not me.
Guess I’ll run away.
I’m never gonna come back home.

Certain roads.
Certain people.
Certain they know me.
I always take what they give me gladly. Sadly.
Never gonna go back home.

I shot a bird and I watched him die.
Nobody cried when I lost my mind this time.
I’m the king of disaster.
I should have asked her.
So I’ll run away.
I’m never gonna go back home.

Walk the city in my sleep.
History is on repeat.
The sun is moving on.
Simply paralyzing.
